CTTC Welcomes the new Director-At-Large, Research

Cell Therapy Transplant Canada (CTTC) is pleased to welcome the organization’s new Director-At-Large, Research: Dr. Jonas Mattsson

Jonas Mattsson is the Director of the Hans Messner Allogeneic Transplant Program at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network, and a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, with over 28 years of experience in allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. He also holds the Gloria and Seymour Epstein Chair in Cell Therapy and Transplantation. In addition to overseeing program activities and managing patient care, Dr. Mattsson is involved extensively in clinical and experimental research, primarily in the areas of allogeneic stem cell transplantation and immunotherapy, having published over 250 peer-reviewed articles. Before moving to Toronto, Dr. Mattsson served as a Professor in Cell Therapy at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, as a Senior Consultant for Clinical Immunology at Karolinska University Hospital, and at the Department of Hematology at Oslo University Hospital in Oslo, Norway. Ongoing research collaboration with the Karolinska Institute continues in Dr. Mattsson’s current role as Visiting Professor.

The CTTC is recognized internationally with several important publications and prospective trials. Amplification of Canada's footprint in the field of transplantation and cellular therapy, through focused unified direction beyond the aims of individual centres, would strengthen this recognition. In achieving this objective, I envision the CTTC playing two key roles. As a facilitator strengthening and ensuring partnerships across Canadian centres, the CTTC will augment its potential to lead both retrospective and prospective multicentre studies, thereby enhancing greater collaborative publications. Secondly, with Canadian participation in both pharmaceutical and collaborative group trials currently being low, the CTTC would play a key role through active involvement and eventual leadership in clinical trials in transplantation and cellular therapy. Being a focal point of contact for sponsors, this will simplify the process and increase the number of trials. A common factor in these two objectives would be to prioritize younger PIs for CTTC studies, ideally providing an opportunity for members from smaller transplant centres to assume these roles.

Please help us in welcoming Jonas, and in thanking Jean-Sébastien Delisle, who made many excellent contributions as DAL, Research over the past 4 years.
